What people use them for

How to use them
- Wash your hands before and after.
- Insert as the pack directs, in a comfortable position, until it sits comfortably and cannot be felt. If you can feel it, it is not in far enough.
- Change every four to eight hours. Never leave one in longer than eight.
- Use the lowest absorbency that copes with your flow, and switch to a pad overnight if you might sleep longer than eight hours.
- Wrap and bin it. Never flush one.
Toxic shock syndrome — worth reading once
TSS is a rare but serious bacterial illness associated with tampon use, and the two things that raise the risk are using a higher absorbency than you need and leaving one in too long. Both are avoidable, which is why the rules above matter.
Remove the tampon and seek medical help immediately if you develop a sudden high fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, dizziness or fainting, a rash resembling sunburn, or muscle aches while wearing one. Tell the doctor you have been using a tampon.
Storage
Keep the wrappers sealed and store somewhere clean and dry. Do not use one whose wrapper is torn or damaged.

How long can I leave a tampon in?
Eight hours at the very most, and four to eight is the normal range. Leaving one in longer raises the risk of toxic shock syndrome. If you sleep longer than eight hours, use a pad overnight instead.
Which absorbency should I choose?
The lowest that copes with your flow. Using a higher absorbency than you need is one of the risk factors for TSS, so it is worth matching it to your flow rather than defaulting to the highest.
Can I use a tampon overnight?
Only if you will be asleep for less than eight hours. Otherwise use a pad — this is one of the situations where the eight-hour limit is easy to exceed without meaning to.
Should it be uncomfortable?
No. A correctly placed tampon cannot be felt. If you can feel it, it is not in far enough — remove it and use a fresh one.
