How to Read a Condom Expiry Date (and Why It Actually Matters)

Latex degrades measurably past its date — this isn't a "best before" suggestion.

Condom expiry dates aren't a soft recommendation. Latex genuinely loses elasticity and strength past the date, raising real breakage risk.

Unlike a lot of "best before" food labelling, a condom's expiry date reflects a real, measurable material change — it's worth actually checking rather than treating as boilerplate.

Where to find it

Printed on the outer box and, separately, on each individual foil wrapper. The box date is what's visible at purchase; the wrapper date is what matters in the moment, since that's the packaging you'll actually be holding when it counts.

How the date is usually expressed

Most brands print either a manufacture date plus a stated shelf life (commonly 3-5 years from manufacture) or a direct expiry date. Either way, the practical takeaway is the same: find the date, and don't use it past that point.

Why it's not just a formality

Latex is a natural rubber, and it genuinely degrades chemically over time — losing elasticity and tensile strength even in good storage conditions, faster in poor ones (heat, sunlight, as covered in our storage guide). Past the expiry date, a condom is measurably more likely to tear or break under normal use stress than a fresh one, even if it looks and feels fine on the outside. This isn't a manufacturer being overly cautious; it reflects real testing data behind the stated shelf life.

What to actually do

Check the date before use, every time, especially for anything that's been stored for a while (a "just in case" condom in a bag or drawer). If it's past date, don't use it — the cost of a fresh pack is trivial next to the risk. And if storage conditions were poor (heat exposure, direct sun, a wallet carried for months), treat it with the same caution even if technically still within date.
